The pavane (pavan, paven, pavin, pavian, pavine, or pavyn) is a slow processional dance in duple time. According to Arbeau it is "usually danced before the basse dance" and "it is the said pavans, played by hautboys and sackbuts, that announce the grand ball".

A pavane is often paired with a Galliard for contrast.
